The Start of a Beautiful Thing.
February 1, 2008Well here is my first post entery for my blog, created for my New Media class. This first post will be about the way games have changed from being Linear communication to to Transactional media.
Back in the 8-bit era(mainly nintendo) you would get a game play it, finish it, then that was it when you go back to play it, it will always be the same. You could talk to friends about it but that was about it. The only way Nintedo, or any game companys could tell how people liked the game was by the sales. The came Super Nintendo, Genisis, and many other systems (jaguar, and 3d0 mainly) but they were still the same. It went all the way up until Ps2 Xbox and Gamecube. Developers could then read the internet for thoughts of ways to imporve a game and they could make a sequle with the changes but they could not change the game after it was realeased. Now with the newest generation, being PS3, 360, and Wii the game can change. You need the internet but changes can be made. With the demo of burnout being realesed many people were not happy with the online multiplayer, the felt not enough people were aloud to play in the same city. So witgh in a few days a patch was realesed and instead of 4 players being in one city it was bumped to 8 players. In the new game Turok, an achievment where you had to kill yourself, a monster, and a teammate was changed due to complaints. you no longer have to kill the teammate to get the achievment. With this generation it is a Transactional Communication Model. And it is a very good thing, at least to me.
