World of Warcraft Beat?

February 28, 2008

Well WoW (World of warcraft) has taken the MMO market almost compleatly.  It has more than 10 million subscribers and it dosn’t seem like it will go down anytime soon since the next expansion pack will be coming out.  In a meeting Activision CEO Bobby Kotick  states that it would take a $500,000,000 to $1,000,000,000 investment to even have a chance to compete with WoW.  Is there anyone company that could chance that much money to take WoW down and not even be sure if it could be done.  In my opinion WoW will fade away but not for a very very long time.  Just like EQ(everquest) did, at one point ti dominated the market but after time newer and better came out.

Podcasting. What fun!

February 23, 2008

I do not listen to a that many podcast but one of my fav things to do on a thursday night is to listen to one main one.  This podcast is Extralife.  It is about all things that are for geeks.  This includes movies, games, books, and anything about technology.  It is very funny and just plain fun to listen to.  To me podcasting is all about the fans of the podcast.  The one i listen to they get callers and they will talk to them on the show sometimes.  The host will pull up email and read them and change the show according to what people say.

Pirate Games?

February 23, 2008

I am not talkign about new games, but the old games.  I am a big fan of old games on the nintendo and super nintendo but sadly as most people know they are no longer made.  I have recently been in the mood to play some of my fav. old games but i do not have access to them so I decided to get some off the internet.  Well one thing led to another and now I have a massive amount of old games on my PSP.  Some people will say that people made those games and should therfore be paid for it.  I would be more than willing but I can’t buy them.  Is this wrong what I did?

Pirate Music?

February 14, 2008

Should someone pirate music?  I am on both sides of this.  In one sence CDs can cost alot.  If there is a song on the radio that you like and you go out and pay $15 for the CD just to find out that you only like that one song you had already heard.  There is almost no way to know if you will like the CD.  Some stores such as FYE have the listening station but those are broke sometimes.

and on the other side who has to pay for the music to be made.  If all music is pirated/ free then what reason would any band have to make music if it is just going to cost them money to play music.

I do download music to get a sample of it.  If i do like the CD i will go out and buy it.  If i do not like the CD i just erase it off of my harddrive.  If everyone did this I think the record industry would be a different place.

Red Alert!

February 14, 2008

C&C Red Alert 3 has been announced today. It is considerd to be the best RTS (Real Time strategy) game by many people. I for one have been a fan since the first C&C but i prefer the Tiberium time line.

EA seems to be listening to its fans by making this game and following the guide lines for the next Red Alert. Red Alert is well know for having some of the crazyest units. From Dolphins with lazers and teslacoil torrents. This game is going to be no different, it is going to have armored bears and transforming tank, and that is just what was announced on day one. I will be following this game till it comes out.

P.S. Who needs Spore anyway?

New T.V show Idea

February 14, 2008

I wonder what a T.V. show would be like if everyepisode was done in the same location. But the thing is each shows diolauge and idea would be done by one person a week. The network could start up an add campaign that each week a “winner” would be chosen and their script would be used as the base of the episode. this would take a long time to get ready with actors and everything else but i think it could work. There would be the same actors and all of that but each show would be different completely. One week a character could have a family member die and they are dealing with that. then next week they could have a drug problem. there are many posibilitys.

The only problem i could forsee is the fact there is no way there could be a continued story line. But that could also be a good thing. With show such asLost people are afraid to sit in in the middle of the season because they would have no idea what was going on. The season fanaly could be a long and extended episode that could span the last and the first.

The Start of a Beautiful Thing.

February 1, 2008

Well here is my first post entery for my blog, created for my New Media class.  This first post will be about the way games have changed from being Linear communication to to Transactional media.

Back in the 8-bit era(mainly nintendo) you would get a game play it, finish it, then that was it    when you go back to play it, it will always be the same.  You could talk to friends about it but that was about it.  The only way Nintedo, or any game companys could tell how people liked the game was by the sales.  The came Super Nintendo, Genisis, and many other systems (jaguar, and 3d0 mainly) but they were still the same.  It went all the way up until Ps2 Xbox and Gamecube.   Developers could then read the internet for thoughts of ways to imporve a game and they could make a sequle with the changes but they could not change the game after it was realeased.  Now with the newest generation, being PS3, 360, and Wii the game can change.  You need the internet but changes can be made.  With the demo of burnout being realesed many people were not happy with the online multiplayer, the felt not enough people were aloud to play in the same city.  So witgh in a few days a patch was realesed and instead of 4 players being in one city it was bumped to 8 players.  In the new game Turok, an achievment where you had to kill yourself, a monster, and a teammate was changed due to complaints.  you no longer have to kill the teammate to get the achievment.  With this generation it is a Transactional Communication Model.  And it is a very good thing, at least to me.
